WinBackup Business

WinBackup Business

Are you in charge of your organization's IT network? Then you definitely care a lot about the data — files and folders, databases, virtual machines (VMs) - on all the PCs and servers in the network.
It is your responsibility to protect all the users' data at all times.

Your users edit documents, crunch numbers, design presentations, collect / process / manage data, thereby building up the valuable data asset for the organization. It is up to you to prevent any loss of data, which are the most valuable items — not so much the hardware components or installed software — on the PC. A mishap like natural disaster, equipment failure, or hacker attacks / security breaches (e.g., malware / ransomware) can destroy all the hard work to build the data over time. Will your users and organization be able to handle the resulting losses? Will any of you know how much and which data might have been affected by such a devastating incident?

While many steps are taken to secure an IT network — and those are important, the simplest and most effective option for safekeeping of your data, even better than an insurance: regular automatic data backup, with encryption — if you want / need to, and preferably stored at a remote (e.g., cloud) location too. In case of any mishap, the required data can be promptly and precisely restored from the backups (local and/or remote). If the backup archive is encrypted, it's largely safe from being exploited by hackers or unauthorized people.

Now you have SARANGSoft WinBackup Business Version 3 to easily backup data from all the PCs and servers in your network. Backup your files and folders, relational databases (starting with SQL Server, followed by MySQL and MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle etc.), virtual machines (starting with Microsoft Hyper-V, followed by VMware, Xen, VirtualBox etc.), as well as perform System Image (SI) / Bare Metal Backup using WinBackup Business. It is the perfect backup tool for Windows networks in businesses, schools & colleges, research labs, non-profits, and more.

WinBackup Business is a centrally controlled (by the organization's IT Administrator) distributed backup process (executed on individual PCs and servers). It enables you to set up automatic or manual backup – either full or incremental – for any or all the computers in your network. You can choose to save to hard disk, network share, removable media (e.g., USB drives) etc. You can choose to compress the backup archives, encrypt those (with AES 128 to 256-bit), schedule the backups, receive email notification on completion, and so on. You can also use SARANGSoft's CloudScape application (bundled with WinBackup Business) to copy the backup archives to your choice of cloud storage (Amazon AWS-S3 or Microsoft Azure) and retrieve from there as needed.

The 'Administrator Console' helps you select the following for a backup --
a) PCs and servers, drives for each PC / server, folders in each drive
b) The database engine (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL etc.), database instance(s), database(s)
c) The hypervisor (e.g., Hyper-V, VMware etc.), existing VMs
d) Bare Metal or System State
You can also set the schedule for backups (full and incremental), backup destination, compression, encryption etc. Backup is performed on each PC / server based on the options specified by you for that computer.

The powerful backup and restore functionality of WinBackup Business is also easy and efficient. It presents all the relevant functionality and options to keep you informed for making the correct choices as per your needs. Neither is it restrictive in the name of being "simple", nor does it present a confusing array of options to be "flexible". It hits the right balance between capability, flexibility, and ease of use.

WinBackup Business generates a set of essential reports to give you full view of the backup process for the whole network over any time period. You will know which PCs and servers are included in the backup (vs. not), the backup schedule, success and failure of the backup attempts, currently running backups etc. In short you will know everything about the backup process, and can make adjustments as you need.

The Restore steps are done directly on the PC(s), for which the backed up data need to be recovered. It includes a number of standard as well as innovative capabilities, such as Manual vs. Structure Restore, Restore Points, Filtered Restore (for files & folders), and more.

NOTE: WinBackup Business Version 3 comes standard with backup and restore functionality for files and folders, exactly as in Version 2. In Version 3, you can also add support -- via optional plugins (license to be purchased separately) -- for backup and restore of a) Databases (starting with Microsoft SQL Server, followed by MySQL & MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle etc.) b) Hypervisors (starting with Microsoft Hyper-V, followed by VMware, Xen, VirtualBox etc.) c) System Imaging / Bare Metal Recovery.

The functionality and options cover all the different scenarios for the whole network, but the user interface makes it easy to understand and choose what you need to do at every step, along with the most common options chosen by default, so that you can breeze through the process.

So, rather than going through a steep learning curve and then repeatedly setting, checking, adjusting, and still worrying about the data backup process, you have a great solution in WinBackup Business Version 3. It's easy to learn and use, works well and reliably, and doesn't cost much. Use exactly what you need (in the form of optional plugins) and pay only for that.

Backup vs. Sync
These days it's very common to synchronize, or Sync in short, your PC data files and folders with a local storage or cloud-based system. There are plenty of such services available. The hard disc manufacturers bundle some kind of "backup" software with the drive, which most of the time does "sync" your files and folders to that disc. The cloud-based sync services keep your data sync-ed with their online storage, for a monthly fee – ranging from US$5 a month to US$100 a month, depending on the amount of backed up data, the service level (quality, speed, reliability) etc. Sync is pretty easy to understand – the latest snapshot of your data is stored somewhere else; if you need it, you can get it.

Backup, on the other hand, bundles up the required files from your PC and stores it as an "archive" in the destination storage – a local hard disc or an online storage (cloud, FTP etc.). There are two types of backups – full and incremental. A full backup takes a snapshot of all your required data files at that time and creates an archive. Since it includes all the files, the "full" backup archive tends to be big in size, even if compression is used, which means it takes up significant storage space and also takes time to complete. The "incremental" backup includes only the files that have changed since the last backup – either full or incremental, i.e., it records the changes from the last time any backup was taken. Since less number of files change often (say daily), an incremental archive is much smaller in size and takes less time to complete. For any computer, it's practical and recommended to use a combination of full and incremental backups, such as monthly full backup and daily incremental backup.

The difference between backup and sync is that sync is convenient and simple to understand, whereas backup is a bit complex to understand but more dependable. In some scenarios, sync is absolutely fine and good enough. However, in most cases sync keeps only the latest version, or at most a couple of versions, of your files. If you by mistake delete or overwrite a file, sync doesn't know that. It "trusts" that you know what you need, and will faithfully mirror what you have done – delete or overwrite / replace the earlier files. If you want to get back a file from may be a a few months or a year before, which is often a requirement (especially in legal scenarios), your sync-ed version might not have it. Despite its somewhat not-so-easy ways, backup let's you choose to keep as much (or as little) of your old data as you want / need. For example, if you need 2-year old version of some files, you can get that back from a backup archive, as along as you have kept those archives. A judicious archive retention policy is the best arrangement to get back data as it evolves over of time.
